BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly (meeting' of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: — WATERWORKS FOREMAN'S REPORT. The Water Works Foreman (Mr. W. Neville) reported as follows: During the month one water service was installed and the by-pass at th!e pumping station fixed, 'the latter being a great improvement. A new 'fence was erected around the Target Rtserve and trees planted. During the month 1,255,000 gallons of watetr was pumped. — Adopted. ROAD FOREMANS REPORT. The road foreman (Mr. A. G. Huntley) reported that during the month the road staff had ibeen engaged in cleaning drains in ( Coley and Putter 'Streets, Avenue Road cast of Spring Street, Baker ami HoWan Streets, No. 6 Line, Purcell Street, and northern part of Russel 'Street. The Reeve Street drain has not yet been finished owing to the growth of golrse on the banks, but the outlet crossing Messrs Ross, Rough and Go’s, property has been cleaned. Repair work has also been carried out on Sandon Road, Purcell Street, and Avenue and Moivtoa Roads. The metal ordered from the Manawatu County Council is now coming to hand together with chips for asphalt work. The work of widening the cutting in Avenue Road near the Cemetery Avas also commenced during the month and will be finished a,t the earliest possible date. During the coming month it is proposed to ’carry out repair work as the metal arrives. Grading AA-ork will also be lindetaken. —Adopted.
MOTION OF SYMPATHY. A motion of sympathy was accorded the Mayor and Mayoress in their recent bereavement, Councilkill's standing in silence for a few moments. CORRESPONDENCE Avas read and dealt with as follows : From the ManaAvatu County Council in reply to the Council’s letter recommending the official opening of the Shannon Bridge, stating that as the bridge had been open for some Months, the controlling body did not consider it advisable to have an official opening. —'Received. From the Main Highways Board, in reply to the Council’s request that a reduction be made in the rate of interest charged in connection with the loan of £BSO l'aised by the Council as its quota towards the erection of the Shannon Bridge, stating that the Board could not see its Avay 'Clear to make any reduction. —The Clerk explained that a feAV months 'after the Council had obtained the loan, the Board had reduced its rate of interest charge frojm 6 per cent, to 5J per cent. The position was that the (Council had made its 'application five or six months too soon. —'The letter AA'as received. From the Public Works Department, asking the Council for any information which would assist them in ascertaining the life 'of steel water pipes.—The Clerk said that the Council’s Avater mains had not been down long enough for the Council to he in a position to give much information in this connection. —The matter was left in the hands of the ToAvn Clerk.
From the Ci'oavu Draftsman, asking Avhether the Coiinjcil desired a continuance of 'the right to expend revenue, derived from the Target Reserve on ether local reserves.—'The (Cleric explained that the Target Reserve Avas practically the only revenue producing reserve the Council possessed and special authority had to be obtained to expend such revenue on other reserves in the toAvn. He had made application for the reneAval of the right- —Action endorsed.
