This morning the local School fifteen journeyed to Shannon to compete for the Austin Banner and Easton Cup competitions, and were successful in defeating the hoine team after a good game. Foxton kicked off on a- heavy ground and for a short time were unable to aiceustom themselves to mud. The play for the first twenty minutes was even, the forwards of both teams being called upon. Here the local team proved the heavier and it was not until Neville took the ball a this toe from the Shannon twenty-five and forced it, that the barraekng and play began. Foxton 3, Shannon nil.
During .the next ten minutes Shannon retaliated. Frcltn a scrum in front of the Foxton posts, the ball went to McElwan who, taking it at his feet, crossed the, line. Foxton 3, Shannon 3.
During the .second spell, the local team made full use of their advantage in weight, and with forward rushes and scrummages, kept the ball in their opponents half but McEwan time after time came to light and saved bis team. He proved by far the most dangerous of the Shannon players. Prom time to time Shannon succeeded in carrying the play out of their own half, but only twice was the score in danger of being altered. Martin proved very safe. Prom a forward rush near the Shannon line, Bills made a dive but fell short, resulting in him having to he picked up Winded when, the scrummage sorted itself out. Several times Devonshire, through bad luck, after coming through the paick, missed chances. Newton was generally with him and the two combined well. At three minutes to time, Coley took a mark in front of the Shannon goal and by a good kick, decided the honours. Mr MeCleavy controlled the game. The outstanding players were as follows :—Shannon: MeEwan and Pickard. Foxton: Devonshire, Bills, Martin, Wfalls and Newton. At the reception at the Shannon •School, Mr Morgan expressed his congratulations to Foxton on their win and expressed the hope that they would have another opportunity of meeting the local team. .On beliaif .of Foxton, Mr Procter said that in his opinion, though Foxton had won, yet a draw would have been a fairer indication of the game.
