MANAWATU-OROUA RIVERS BOARD.
PROPOSED AMENDMENT OF ACT. An important suggested amendment to the Manawatu-Oroua River Board Act was one of the chief •topics discussed at the meeting of the River Board in Palmerston N. on Thursday. Mr. P. E. Baldwin, Board’s solicitor, reported upon steps that had been taken to draft legislation to enable the Board to carry out work in any portion, of its district without reference to the ratepayers as a. whole. He explained the various, clauses of the drafted amendment to the River Board’s Act. First of all, 'the amendment would give the Board power to rate any area, for compensation in respect of any worlk done for 'the benefit of that area and such rate will be in addition to the rate for construction of ‘the work. Secondly, any money received by the -Board for any land sold or leased in connection with any special work, will be handed over to that separate area. Thirdly, the board may- contract to take over any work carried out at the expense of a separate area in so fax as it is of benefit to the Board’s undertaking. Fourthly, the Board may at any time apply for a loan to cover all claims. The Board approved of the proposed amendments and instructed Mr. Baldwin to take the necessary steps to have the amendment put on the statute book.
