THE PORT OF FOXTON
ANOMALOUS FREIGHT CHARGES. At Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton 'Chamber of Commerce, Mr. F. iS. Goldingham wrote drawing the attention of Chamber to the fact that the Flour Distributors wholesale price to the trade is £l6 5/- per ton for shipment to Wanganui oir Wjellington, but if the flour is shipped to Foxton, the price is 15/- per ton inoi'e, which had the effect of putting Foxton right off Hie map as far as flour distribution was concerned. A letter was also received from tire Foxton Harbour Board, enclosing a. copy of a letter from Mr. Goldingham pointing out that biscuit manufacturers refused to pay freight, on their goods to Foxton whereas they paid freight on goods forwarded to W r anganui and Wellington." It was decided to write to the N.Z. Flour Distributors, requesting that Foxton be placed on the same footing as Wanganui and Wellington.
During the discussion which arose over the freight charged on biscuits, Mr A. E. Scott said that, the reason the trade paid freight to Wellington and Wianganui was in order that their goods might he able to compete with products manufactured in both of the abovementioned towns. It was decided however, to write to the Biscuit and Confectionery Manufacturers’ Association, asking that the same concession placed on goods to Wiangamii and Wellington, be-extended to apply locally. It was also resolved to thank Mr. Goldingham for placing the above matters before the Chamber.
