CHARITABLE AID RELIEF.
IN UNDESERVING CASES. The somewhat extraordinary fact was revealed at a meeting' of the Wellington Hospital Board on Thursday that a. family of four have solme mlonths past been receiving charitable aid to the extent of £1 5/- a. week from the social welfare committee, while during the period the income of the family amounted to £2l 15s a month.
When the committee made this discovery, the relief, o'f course, was promptly stopped. Mr. G. Petherick, chairman of the Social Welfare committee, informed the Hospital Board that a family which the committee had been helping was also in receipt of £2l 15s a month. There were only four in the family and it was a sad ease, so fair a,s the husband was concerned. The committee only knew part of the facts and investigations showed that what he now statedwas correct. There was no doubt the family was receiving £2l 15s a imonth. and. had purchased a piano at a cost oif £l9O, although only a deposit had been paid on it.
Mr. A. J. McCurdy said that in another ease it was fouiid that the last instalment on a piano had just been paid and another person receiving help was found to own a section.
