PREFERENTIAL RAILWAY RATES.
FEILDING CHAMBER SUPPORTS FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
In a letter to the Feilding Chamber of Commerce the Foxton Harbour Board set out facts in support of its request for the help of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce in endeavouring to convince the Railway department that it should grant to Foxton the same preferential railway rates as were enjoyed by Wanganui. It was stated that the Class A. rate from Foxton to Feilding was 33/7 for a distance of 36 .miles, while the preferential rate for class A. goods from Wanganui to Feilding, a. distance of 51 miles was 20/-. Tbs had resulted in Foxton losing a gireat deal of trade and it was unfair competition. Mr. Lawson, Feilding stationmaster, stated that the WanganuiFeilding rate was the result of the department’s determination to compete with the motor-lorry traffic. The same did not affect Foxton. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr. J. ! S. Tingey, to support the Harbour Board in any representations it might make.
