THE HEMP INDUSTRY
GRADING STATISTICS FOR 1928-29.
The Department of Agriculture has issued the following grading statistics foil 1 the year 1928-29 in connection with the hemp industry. HEMP. During the year hemp was graded at the various ports throughcut the Dominion' as follows :
During the year two bales at Auckland, and 164 at Picton were graded (fine; 458 hales at Auckland, 1867 at Wellington, 642 .at Fdjxton, four at Dunedin, )65 at Bluff, and 12 at Lyttelton were, rejected and 58 at W]alLingtop, 26 at Foxton and one at Lyttelton condemned.
The total number of bales graded at each port during the year was as follows, the figures for the year 1927-28 being given in : parenthesis :
Auckland 15,360 (21,989), decrease 6629; Wellington 19,888 (25,337), decrease 5449; Foxton 10,786 (19021), decrease 97; Blenheim 531 (15131, decrease 982: Dunedin.l3B (1197), decrease 1059; Port Chalmers 1244 (1582), decrease 338; Bluff 9347 (14,321), decrease 4974; Lyttelton 447 (1374), decrease 927; Waakuku 126 (125), increase 1; Romiahapa nil (164); Wairo'a nil (1655).
The total number of bales in each grade for the year was as follows, the figures for 1927-28 'being given in parenthesis:— Fine 166 (239); good fair 4840 (5850); high fair 25826 (29643); low fair 19714 (40121); common 5443 (10300); rejected 2548 (2868); condemned 85 (109); a grand total of .58622 bales being graded during 1928-29 as against 89,130 in 1927-28, a decrease of 30,508 bales. TOW. The particulars of the tow graded during the year are as follows: —
Wa.iroa During the year 261 bales at Auckland, 390 at Wellington, 83 at Foxton, seven at Lyttelton, 22 at Pt. Chahnei's, and 43 at Bluff were condemned. The total number of bales graded at each port was as follows, the figures for 1927-28 being given in parenthesis:— Auckland 4905 (6894), a decrease of 1989 bales; Wellington 4832 (5379), a decrease of 547; Foxton 2233 (4884), a decrease of 2651; Picton 365 (339), a decrease of 34; Blenheim 132 (734), a decrease of 602; Lyttelton 95 (393), a decrease of 298; Dunedin 3 (13), a decrease of 10; Pt. Chalmers 160 (475), a decjrease of 315; Bluff 4011 (5796), a decrease of 1785; Waiikuku 858 (906), a dedrease of 48; W’airoa nil (744). The total number of bales graded in each grade during the year was as follows, the figures for 1927-28 being given in parenthesis :
Ist grade 2253 (3235), 2nd grade 9351 (15119), 3rd grade 5124 (7346), condemned 806 (863), a grand total of 17,534 bales being graded as against 26557 in 1927-28, a decrease of 9023. STRIPPER SLIPS. During the year 25 bales at Auckland, 128 at Wellington and 39 at the Bluff were graded second grade. Sixty-eight bales at Auckland, 19 at Wellington and 998 at the Bluff were graded third grade and 17 at Auckland, 13 at Wellington and 37 at the Bluff were condemned. The total number of bales graded at each port during the year With those for 1927-28 in parenthesis, were as follows:—> Auckland 110 (141), decrease 31; Wellington 160 (582), decrease 422; Eoxton nil (38); Bluff 1074 (1581), decrease 507. The total number in each, grade with the numlbelr for 1927-28 in parenthesis, was as follows: •First grade nil (140), 2nd grade 192 (725), 3rd grade 1085 (1423), rondemned 67 (85), a grand total of 1344 as against 2373, a decrease of 1029 bales. STRIPPER. TOW. During the year* 357 bales at Auckland, and 10 at Foxton were graded Ist grade; 71 at Auckland, 144 at Wellington and 304 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade and 28, a decrease of 620 bales, were graded 3rd grade. Four bales at Auckland were condemned. The total number off bales graded at each port with the figures for 1927-28 in parenthesis, were as follows: Auckland 103 (126), decrease 23; Wellington 501 (864), decrease 363; Foxton 324 (42.8), decrease 104. ‘The total number of bales in each grade at the various ports was as follows, the figures for 1927-28 being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 367 (190), 2nd grade 519 (1098), 3rd grade 38 (223), condemned 4 (37), a grand total of 928 as. against 1548 graded in 192728, a ecrease of 620 bales.
