MOTOR ACCIDENT.
PALMERSTON NORTH RESIDENT KILLED. A distressing fatal accident occurred in Chufreh Street West, Palmerston North, not far from ithe intersection of Cook Street, shortly before fiive o’clock on Wednesday evening, the victim being Miss Delphine Ida Wheeler, 30 years of age, daughter of Airs. E. J. Wheeler, >a widow, of Keith Street, Palmerston North. Aliiss Wheeler was struck by a ear driven by Aljr. T. F. Conway, of F’itz.herbert, who was returning holme from Longburn. According : to Air. Conway, it was raining at the time and dark. An approaching ear with powerful lights did not improve his vision and the slowed down .to about 12 miles per horn’ as it was his intention to turn into Cook Street at the same time keeping a good lookout. The first he saw of AEss Wlheeler was when be caught a glimpse of the red overcoat she was wearing. She was then right in front of his oar and he had no time to pull up before the unfortunate woman was hit. Mr. IC'onway states that he was totally unaware of her presence on the road and the fact that she was carrying a black umbrella against the rain, undoubtedly helped to make her in'conspicuous in the darkness.
Ah’. Oornvay conveyed the injured lady 'to hospital where she succumbed two hours later as a result of the serious injuries she had received.
