REMOVAL OF RUBBISH

FROM BUSINESS CENTRE. At last night’s 'Borough Council meeting a list of names of business people in Main Street was submitted, expressing willingness to pay 6d per week and provide suitable receptacles for the removal of ordinary rubbish. The Public Works' Comimittee had -authorised a canvass to be made of 'those willing to contribute to the scheme but Awing to the lack of support from a number concerned, the committee recommended that the sejrVide be not instituted at present. ] The Mayor expressed surprise that so many had turned the proposal down. Cr. Cowley said there were at least six of those who favoured the proposal who were public-spirited enough to support the service but who did not require it. The Mayor said the request for the service had been made by the Cbajmlber of Commerce. -dr. Robinson said be did not approve of the request being held over. Rubbish should be removed and the town kept clean. The Mayor asked whether the ratepayers should ;be charged for the sejrvice in Main Street. The Council was prepared to consider an alternate proposal if one was submitted. The Works Committee’s recommendation was adopted.
