DRIFT TO TOWNS
GOOD ECONOMIC SIGN. In the course of an address at Dunedin, Dr. Fisher, Professor of Economics, stated that the drift of population to the towns was worldwide and could not in New Zealand lie explained iby our education sys.'tein or arbitration system. So far from being deplorable this drift was a cheering .proof of economic progress. The world was getting adequate supplies of food and raw material, which it was the farmers’ function to provide so that there need be no concern about the changes in’,the ratio of the number of tanners to the total population. In conclusion, Dr. Fisher stated that the would he alarmed if there were a reversal of drift throughout the world, for it would indicate diHieulty in maintaining the Hood supplies, with an inevitable depression of .economic standards.
