THE ROUND BUSH RESERVE.
DISCUSSED BY 'CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Within a stone’s throw of Foxton, at Motuiti, there is a scenic reserve and bush and ‘bird sanctuary known as 'the “Riound Bush.” The reserve contains sofme of our best specimens o'f plant life. Mr. J. K. HorniMow is the ranger for the reserve and some (time ago he suggested to the Forestry Department, through the late Sir James Wilson, that the 'bush should be protected by a belt of trees along the west and south boundaries. The reserve is bounded by ‘the Harbour Board endowment which is leased as a dairy farm. A't last night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. D. Christie /vice-president), called attention to this reserve and said something should be done to pro - tccit .the hush and afford facilities for allowing the public to visit it, under safeguards, for picnics. Other members agreed to this suggestion. The Fireside nt said in his opinion the reserve should be controlled by certain trustees who would exorcise supervision over it. It was stated that timber was being removed and that stock was grazing in the area and destroying the young growth. The President stated that any person removing or damaging the trees was liable upon conviction to n fine not exceeding £IOO. It was decided that members inspect the reserve and formulate suggestions to the Government for the better protection of the reserve.
