FLOOD WATER AT MOUTOA
RIVER. BOARD CHAIRMAN’S INSPECTION. Air. IV. S. Carter, chairman of the Manawnlu-Orona River Board, and who has a farm at Moutoa, visited the flooded area on Thursday. He stated that he had never seen a greater overflow than was pouring ■through this area. The break was from two to three chains in length and he considered that the river would have to fall three feet before the flow through the breach would cease. The Moutoa swamp, he stated, was a sea of 'water while the flooding had been still further increased through the river spilling over the bank at the Poplar mill. Before noon, however, this particular overflow had subsided and late in the afternoon had practically ceased. The whole of the Moutoa area was flooded with the exception of the river bank but the level of the water was about IS Inches below tha.t of the November flood. Settlers had removed their, stock in time hut in one or two eases animals are reported to have been lost.
WATERS RECEDING. The tlood waters are reported to he receding in most parts of the district with the exception of the Wihirokino, where the water is conlinjbd owing fto iioodtibanks which will have to be cut to give the flooded area quick drainage. The Whirokino road is impassible with water over the fence tops in places. The Shannon and Palmerston N. roads arc now clear for traffic. The .train lias now resumed its usual time table. An automatic river-level indicawhich supplies the level of the Maiiawatu River at Fitzhedbert Bridge, has been installed in the telephone exchange at Palmerston North. The local subscribers to the telephone exchange are notified that information regarding the depth of the river will be readily supplied from the local exchange. 'Duringiflood periods information will be advised lo subscribers conceiTitd of every fool rise in the river from 7 to 10 feet. Every Gin. rise I ruin 10 to 14 feet, and every rise of 3in. above the 14ft. level.
