EXCESSIVE SPEEDING.
MOTOR. CYCLISTS BEFORE COURT. SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED. At the local S.M. Court this morning, before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., John Gower and Walter E. Alsop 'were charged by the Traffic inspector (Mr W. Neville) with.riding ,mo.tor cycles in Union Street on April 17th at a speed which was dangerous to the public. Mr. Bergin, who appeared on behalf of the Municipality, stated that at about twenty minutes to four on the day in question, when the school children were- returning to their Wmes, the ,two accused evidently had an argument as to who possessed the fastest motor-bike and proceeded to prove their claims by indulging' in a race down Union St., one of the most thickly populated streets in Foxton. As a result several people rang up the Traffic Inspector and complained about the defendants. Alsop,-who was a new arrival in Foxton, admitted that thp was doing 68 miles per hour. He had never previously been in trouble, but the Traffic Inspector bad warned Gower on several occasions for recklessly riding a mo-tor-cycle and for reckless driving of a. motor-car. The most serious aspect of the case was that the school children were about at the time of the race. The S.M.: There is no excuse for this sort of thing. Both accused will be convicted and .fined £5 with costs 10/-, and I hope this will prove a lesson to theim.
