CoTneille Hubert de Mey Da Remade mas sentenced at Wellington yesterday to 18 months’ hard labour on three charges of theft by converting to his own use £2OO belonging to a. widow whom he had persuaded to execute a power of attorney in his favour. Mr. H. Cotter, who is employed as a stripper feeder at King’s Mill on the riverbank, had a narrow escape frojm serious injury one day last week. He was working at the stripper at the time and while engaged in clearing away some rubbish about the mouth of the feeder the bottom of his coat by some means got dragged into the machine. In a second Mr. Cotter was hurled against the mouth piece of the stripper, his right arm, the top caught, was twisted up around his hack. Fortunately the belt from the motor driving the stripper was fairly slack and the jamb caused the stripper to stop. All’. Cotter was unable to extricate himself from his position and called for assistance. Those who rushed to the scene received a nasty shock as from his position it appeared as if Mr. Cotter had his a|rm in the stripper up to the shoulder. He was, however, uninjured and was quickly released by cutting away his coat. It’s funny, but it doesn’t mailer a button how many pipes a chap has —he can always do with, another! And it often happens that the expensive pipe doesn’t smoke as sweetly as the common briar that cost, perhaps, the humble bob. But after all, it’s the tobacco that counts more than the pipe. Some brands, if smoked habitually, play billy 0 with the nerves or heart. They’re overloaded with nicotine — that’s what’s the matter. Most of the imported ’bavoies are like that. If you want really pure “weed,” go for the New Zealand article every time! The leaf is toasted and this helps materially to eliminate the nicotine. It also develops flavour and bouquet. You can smoke New Zealand tobacco till all’s blue —and no harm done. There are various biarnls, special favourites being “Riverhead Gold,” (a mild and delicious aromatic); “Cavendish,” (a delightful mediulm); “Navy €ut No. 3,” (a blend of choice tobaccos of medium strength); and “Cut Plug No. 10” (a fine full-flavoured sort). Every tobacconist in the land keeps these tobaccos in stock. —Advt,
