UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM.

SIR .JOSEPH WARD’S IDEAL. Reference to the unemployment problem was made by the Prime Minister in his address at New Plymouth on Monday. The problem was worse this year than it had ever been before, he said, and there seemed to be no end to it, but he felt that they must get into the position of saying to the men who were forced to seek employment that there was land for them to take on which they could support themselves and families by growing vegetables, keeping bees, or in other ways. It was only by making a small beginning in that way that they could help to get over the unemployment trouble. He wanted to stop the system by which what amounted to huge doles were being given to aid men, deserving men, to get work. If they realised the ideal that he had in inind they would have niore money for roads and other necessary works. The unemployment problem was staggering, and lit had been receiving a great deal of his attention since he had been in office in an attempt to unravel it. There was real necessity for co-operation to remove the difficulty permanently.
