CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting: of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Foss’s rooms on Tuesday evening, presided over by Mr. J. Iv. Hornblow (President). Also present were Messrs .J. :Ross, C. M. Hewett, li. Hangiheuea, D. Barron, D. Christie, M. E. Perreau, J. Aitehison, T. McGee, J. M. Thomson, G. Smith, I. Corn, H .E. Ganbett, H. Osborne, \V. E. Bullard and the secretary (Mr. 11. Ilornblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs F. A. Mason, A. E. Scott, 11. X. Spoil's and J. Martin. new: member. The President extended a welcome to the Chamber to Mr. T. ArcGee, a newly elected member. The President hoped that Mr. McGee’s stay in Foxton would be happy and profitable. Mir. McGee suitably replied and thanked the Chamber for its welcome. tie was pleased to he elected to the 'Chamber and was only too willing to assist in anything that was for the betterment of the town. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The President referred to the death of the late Sir James Wilson and spoke of the long years of service he had rendered this district as 'member for Manawatu, and on the Hospital Board. The Mayor (Mr. Perreau; also made reference to the deceased's active interest in the Levin-Marton railway deviation scheme so'me years ago. His advice to the district then had been to tight on and ultimately this scheme would come. 11c deplored the loss of such a useful and public-spirited man as the late iSir James had proved himself to be. Ilis place would lie hard to fill. • On the motion of the Mayor and President it was decided to convey the Chamber’s sympathy to Lady Wilson. ALUNICTPA L ELECTIONS. The President extended the Chamber’s congratulations to the Aiayor and Messrs John Ross, 1L Rangiheuea and D. li. Barron, Chamber members who had been elected to municipal honours at the i eeent Council election. Mr. Perreau thanked the President for his remarks and Cr. Barron said that he would always give support to any (Chamber recommendation placed before the Council which would benelit the ratepayers as a whole. CORRESPONDENCE
was read and dealt with as follows: Frolm the Associated Chambers, t nelosing a copy of a request by the N.Z. .Federation of Drapers, Clothiers, and Boot Retailers that an endeavour be made to secure similur legislation in New Zealand as that obtaining in England in regard to the British Landlord and Tenant Act. —Endorsed. From the Director of Education, inclosing a Primary School Progress card which it is proposed to introduce into the schools throughout the Dominion, and asking for an expression of opinion as to the value of the cards from the Chamber.—Decided to endorse the scheme.
From tlie Associated Chambers, notifying- that the Government has decided to abolish the cash-on-de-li very system.—Received. THE PORT OF FOXTON. The President reported that as a i csult of the efforts of certain lo<al residents, prolminent amongst whom was the Mayor, a company had been formed to purchase a boat for the Fox ton trade, and also that the Canterbury Steamship Co., was placing a boat on the Foxton trade. It was decided to place on record the excellent services rendered the community by the Mayor and Mr. G. Fraser in the formation of the shipping company. RUBBISH COLLECTION. Mr. J. Aitchison throught down a recommendation that a weekly rubbish collection be inaugurated within the borough and referred to the present unsanitary system obtaining. ■ ■ It was decided to recommend the Borough 'Council to give consideration to the adoption of some system of rubbish collection. TAXATION. Mr. D. Christie drew the Chamber's attention to the fact that the Prime Minister had made a statement to he effect that it was intended to raise a further £300,000 by means of taxation but he had given no indication of where the additional taxation was going to be imposed. The speaker moved a motion to the effect that the Prime Minister be written to suggesting that the whole of the additional revenue he derived from taxation placed on imports from the United States and other foreign- countries. Tile motion was seconded by Mr. Koore and carried.
LE VIN-MAiRTON DE VIA TION. Mr. Cl. Smith considered the time was now opportune for another attempt at having the Levin-Marton railway put through. On his suggestion it was decided to write to the (Levin and Marion Chambers with a view to resuscitating the Le-vin-Marton Deviation League.
