Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MAY 7, 1929. AIR PORT AT THE BEACH.
THE Minister for Defence (Hon. T. M. Wilford) has not lost much time in sending one of his aviation experts to inspect and report upon the suitability of an area at the local seaside as an aerial port. It is scarcely a fortnight ago since the Minister personally inspected the locality and expressed surprise at what he considered a natural aerodrome. Major Wilkes made an inspection yesterday and in due course will submit his views to the Minister. There doeS not appear any present possibility of forming an aerial club locally, which, according to the Minister would involve an annual expenditure of £3OOO, but this fact should not preclude all interested from taking steps to erect a hangar at comparatively small cost so that the site could be used as a stopping port if required by either civil or defence (machines. As aviation will play an important part in the future of this Dominion, /both from a transport and defence point of view, Foxton should afford a suitable strategic point between the South Island and the North, and the reports of the expert will be awaited with interest.
