NEW ZEALANDER SHOT
IN BERLIN RIOTS. FORMER. RESIDENT OF . WANGANUI. Berlin, May 4. Among the killed in last night’s rioting was Charles E. Mac Kay, a New Zealander, formerly of Wanganui and recently doing journalistic work. Apparently, he disregarded police warnings and strolled unconcernedly in the streets of the Neukoelln quarter during the thick of the disturbances. The police found his body lying in the street with a bullet wound in the breast. He was rushed to hospital, but died on route. London, May 4. The Sunday Express, in regretting to have to announce the death of Mr. Mac Kay, -says he was their assistant correspondent at Berlin. The paper publishes a cable from Mr. Sefton Deliner, chief correspondent of the Daily Express and Sunday Express saying: “Mac Kay was one of my best friends and one of the most brilliant men I ever met.” He describes how they together toured the Wedding district on Friday night till 11.30, when Deliner went to cable London, while Mac Kay went to the Menkolien district, with instructions to ascertain f'robi the police- whether the disturbance was continuing. Mac Kay had no intention of entering the danger zone. If lie did, it was by accident. Mac Kay wore next to his chest an amulet of green jade, which was given him by a Maori chief. If this exercised any influence at all it brought only bitter sorrow and disappointment.
Mac Kay was in London last year end engaged in a business venture in which lie put all his money. The business failed and Mac Kay Avent to Berlin, nine months ago. Mr. fMacKay’s grandfather was an officer in the Maori Avar.
