FOXTON’S NEW STEAMER.
The Canterbury Steam Shipping Company’s new steamer for the South Island-Foxton trade should be ready to take up her regular running in June next. She has a carrying capacity of 325 tons deadweight and with twin sets of powerful Diesel engines will develop 9 knots on a low consumption of oil. Masts, derricks and winches ore designed for handling lifts up to 10 tons, the winches being operated by independent oil engines. Electric lighting will be installed throughout the vessel and in every respect her owners intend her to be most efficiently equipped. The design of the vessel is specially calculated to meet the special needs of bar harbour work, the Company’s particular interest in this respect being the Foxton entrance. The vessel is now well under construction by Mr. George Niecol of Freeman’s Bay. Captain Monro has been in Auckland supervising the building. The Company is making every endeavour to secure a suitable vessel to run temporarily until the new steamer is ready for service.
