ARTESIAN WATER AND GOITRE.
MEDICAL OPINION. At a meeting of the -Palmerston North division of the Neiw Zealand branch -of the B.M.A. held last evening the question of artesian 'water as a cause of goitre was discussed. The opinion of the division was that the incidence o-f simple goitre in this district Will not be increased iby the supplementing of the present supply by artesian water. The recognised authority upon the -causation of goitre, Lieut.Col. McCarrison, 1.-M.'S. at the International Conference on goitre held under the auspices of the Swiss Goitre Commission at Berne in August, 1927, stated: — “The prevention of the disease and -its sequel rests on—(1) The perfecting of sanitation. (2) The provision of pure and protected water supplies. (3) Efficient personal hygiene and drainage of the gastro-intestinal tract. (4) The use of a'well-balanced food containing a sufficiency of iodine in a natural state.
