SEQUEL TO RIOT.
BEFORE COURT. Gisborne, April 26. Forty-two charges were preferred against two Europeans and eight Maoris in Port Awanui Police Court on Wednesday, arising out of the riot at Te Araroa on Saturday night, when Constable Thom was assaulted and the mob had to Ibe quelled by local residents armedviwith pick handles. The accused were dealt with as follows: Willia/m Brosnahan, nine months’ hard labour; Tamiti Taiopa, six months’ hard; Tu Huihui, seven months’ hard; Grahata Edmonds, eight months’ hard; Maka Ihaka, six months! hard; Komene Poutou, three months’ hard; Alfred Moran, six months’ hard; Wa'tene Poutu, three months’ hard. Hirau Karoka was fined £5 and costs '£4; Poki Paringatai was fined £2 and costs £5 10s. The majority of the accused were charged with assaulting the police, resisting the police, common assault and inciting to resist the police. The eight prisoners will be brought to the Gisborne gaol when the flooded rivers on the coast subside.
