DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS’ ASSOCIATION.
On Saturday last at Palmerston North, a large gathering of headmasters and secondary assistants .met, and formed a branch of the N.Z. District High Schools Secondary Teachers’ Association, with headquarters at Palmerston North. One of the principal objects of this association is the advancement of the interests of secondary education in District High Schools, and to that end the following important motions werefcamed at last Saturday’s meeting. (1) That agriculture being probably the most useful and also the compulsory science in District High Schools, this branch would welcome further evidence of the Government’s williugness to assist suitable boys, without capital, to become small holders and to follow agricultural pursuits. (2) That as the efficiency of District High Schools has undoubtedly been reduced by separation, for grading purposes of primary and secondary averages, with consequent reduction in staff, that grouping' of the averages in both departments be reinstated. (3) That provision should be made at the Ti*aining Colleges for the training of secondary assistants of District High Schools. (4) That this meeting urges that the staffing of Secondary Departments of District High Schools should be placed upon the same footing as corresponding grades of secondary schools, Mr. F. A. Mason, the local headmaster has the honour of being made the first president of- the branch, with Mr. Foss, of Levin, as vice-president, and Mr. Doel secretary and treasurer. /;
