SHOCKING LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT.
TWK) MEN KILLED AT SHANNON ONE A WELL-KNOWN LOCAL RESIDENT. A shocking level crossing accident occurred at Shannon this morning, as a result of which Mr Joseph Better, a well-known local resident, and H. Tremewan, of Shannon, were killed. It appears that the two men were driving a lorry over the Vance St. crossing, when the south-bound Auckland express crashed into the vehicle, completely wrecking it and hurling the shattered remains on to the side of the track. The force of the impact was terriffic and both occupants were badly injured, Air Retter being killed outright. Mr Tremewan, who was in an unconscious and critical state when picked up, was placed on the train to be conveyed to Levin for medical attention, but lie succumbed to his injuries before reaching there. Mr Retter had been in business in Shannon as a wood and coal merchant for some time, and was a married man residing in Goley St., Foxton. He was well-known locally, having been in residence locally for a number of years. He leaves a wife and four children, two hoys and two girls. Mr Retter spent last evening at his home in Foxton and left for Shannon in his lorry this morning. Mr H. Tremewan, was about 19 years of age and had been in Millet ter’s employ only about ten days. Ho was a son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Tremewan, of Shannon. It is not known who was driving tlir .motor lorry at the time of the accident.
