S.M. COURT

MONTHLY SITTING. The monthly sitting of the local S.M. Court was held this morning, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M. BY-LAW CASES. W. Thompson and' W. Baird were each convicted and lined ss, with costs 10s, for cycling after dark without lights. UNREGISTERED BEES. Frederick McKenzie, labourer, of Foxton, was charged by the Agricultural Department with keeping unregistered Ibees. Evidence was given by David S. Robinson (Inspector), who stated that he visited McKenzie’s place on December 29th, when he discovered one hive and one box containing bees. No application had been made by defendant for registration of the hoes. McKenzie said that he had registered the bees in* 1925.

Mr Robinson said that the Act had provided for the re-registration of bees every three years. Registration, however, was now permanent as from Ist of last year. Unregistered bees were a source of annoyance to bee-keepers, and liable to spread disease. McKenzie’s bees had been in a bad state when inspected, but a permit would have been granted had application been made. McKenzie had since burned his bees, and the Department did not press for a heavy penalty. The case was brought more as a warning to others. The S.M. said that as there had evidently been a misunderstanding on McKenzie’s part over the registration, defendant would be convicted an dnrdered to pay costs 10s.
