LEVIN-FOXTON HIGHWAY
WORK TO BE DONE BY DAY LABOUR.
At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhenua County Council the engineer (Mr Brewster) reported that “plans of three miles of the FoxtonLevin road have been approved by the Main Highways Board and work will proceed on this section as soon tas t'he Council is ready to start.”
The works committee reeoiipnended that tenders be called for the first three miles of this road, part of No. 1 highway, from Oxford St., Levin, north. After considerable discussion the ■chairman (Cr. Monk) said he was strongly of opinion that it would be unwise to cfall for tenders for this particular piece of work. They had a good many trained men who had been employed during the past year on paving and metalling, and it would he 'advisable to retain these men for similar work next sulmfmer. He moved that the committee’s recommendation be deleted and that the engineer be authorised to proceed with the first three miles by day labour. This Was carried. The engineer added that the formation of the three miles would take practically the whole of the winter.
