FINDING OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS. When the new’s was circulated yesterday afternoon (hat the Soutliern Cross had been found and that the fliers were safe, it gave vent to a feeling of intense relief and joy by the pulblic and “thank God” correctly expressed the outburst. The Canberra’s message from Darwin that she hail found the Southern Cross, that the airmen were alive and that food had been dropped, was flashed round the globe. The position of the ’plane was south of Port George Mission on a mud flat. It was 10.46 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, that the .Southern Cross “.hopped off” froan .Richmond Aero - dro’me, Sydney, on the first leg of her flight to England. From Richmond to Wynjjham the air-line distance is 1,860 miles. The next stage of the journey was fom Wyndham to Singapore, and it was hoped to complete the flight to England in 13 days. Bad all gone well, the Southern Cross should have been at her destination yesterday.
SOUTHERN CROSS ACHIEVEMENTS. June 4, 1.30 a.m. Left Honolulu. June 5: 12.20 p.m. Arrived Suva, Fiji, 3,290 miles, in 34 hr. 50anin. June 8: 1 p.in. Left Suva. June 9: 10.14 a.m. Arrived Brisbane, 1,881 miles, in 21 hr. 14min. Total mileage, trans-Pacific flight 7,591 miles; actual flying time: 83 hrs. 29min. June 10: 10.10 a.m. Left Brisbane. 3.5 p.m. Arrived Sydney, 585 miles. August 11: noon: Left Melbourne on trans-Australian flight. August 12: 9.15 am. Arrived Perth, West Australia, 2,000 miles, in 23 hr. (fknin. August 26: Left Perth. August 27: Arrived Adelaide. August 28: Left Adelaide and arrived Sydney. September 10: 5.30 p.m. (Eastern Australian time): Left iSydney for Ohris'bchurch, 1,660 miles: arrived September 11, 9.20 am. (N.Z. time). •September 14-25: Toured Dominion in Bristol fighters: Christchurch Blenheim, Wellington, Hawera, Auckland, Wanganui, Blenheim, 'Christchurch. September 25: Southern Cross arrived ait Blenheim from Christchurch. October 13, 4.51 am. Left Blenheim for Sydney. October 14, 3.47 a.m. (N.Z. time) Arrived Sydney. 1,534 miles in 22 hr. 51min. March 30, 1929: 10.46 am. Southern Cross left Richmond for Wyndham (1,860 miles) and England. March 31 p.m. Forced down in heavy rain. April 12: Canberra reports aviators found safe and well.
