A fortunate escape from serious injury was experienced by Mr. R. Bryant on the Himatangi road on Saturday evening last. At about 5 p.m. Mr. Bryant was returning from Oroua Downs, when owing possibly to bad visibility through misty rain, lie failed to notice, the approach >f the Sanson train as he was about to negotiate the railway crossing at Hartley’s blacksmith shop. The tra|in struck the motor van, completely wrecking it, and fortunately throwing Mr. Bryant, clear, hi; escaping with a braising. A collision occurred on Saturday evening in the Avenue at the corner of Lindsay Road, Levin, say's the Chronicle. As the Pox ton mail car driven by Air. P. Rout, on its Way to Foxton, approachcl the corner, a bread delivery van owned by Mr. E. W|liym'an came around the corner, and a collision occurred, (he van striking the front willed and running hoard of Mr. Routes ear. The wheel of ithe mail ear was damaged, and two trunks strapped on the hoard also suffered. The chassis of the bread van, as a. result of the collision, was also considerably damaged. They staged a .mock trial at a iCen'tral Otago township recently. The prisoner was —Tobacco. There was a judge and jury and a large attendance of the public. Many witnesses were called, and counsel having addressed the Court the judge summed up. He said accused (represented by a well-known local resident), had hosts of friends and many enemies. He was accused of being apoisoner. But when tobacco poisoned people it was their own fault —they .smoked the wrong kind. Imported tobacco was mostly full of nicotine aiul therefore highly injurious. Happily, however, there were other kinds —those produced in New Zealand, for example. These were practically free from nicotine, owing to the toasting process, and couldn’t hurt anjßody. The question the jury had to decide was: “Is tobacco guilty or not guilty of poisoning its devotees'?” The jury found a. verdict of “not guilty” as farms toasted tobacco is concerned, without; leaving the box. “Riverhead Gold,” “Cavendish,” “Navy Cut” and “Cut Plug No. 10,” all toasted.—Advt.
