MANAWATU RABBIT BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING.
Tho monthly meeting 'of the ManaWatu Rabbit Board Was held in the secretary’s office on Thursday, presided over by 'Trustee B. G. Gower (Chairman). Also present were Trustees W. E. Barber, F. 0. Raikes, R. Boswell, J. Gloyn and the secretary (Mr. R. Rangiheuea). Mr. D. R. Barron (Inspector) was also in attendance. Apologies for absence were received frou Trustees .J. F. McKolvie, A. Cooke and Grammar. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr. D. R. Barron) reported as follows: — During the past three weeks I have been engaged in the usual inspection of properties in the Board area. In most cases farmers whose properties were in need of attention, and who were written to last month, have completed the necessary work, while others who have not done so, have been interviewed and requested to have immediate completion 'Carried out. •Since last meeting very beneficial rains have been experienced throughout the district, and the land has received enough rain to enable fumigation to be very successfully carried out, and farmers whose properties are" in need of attention should lose no time in taking advantage of the good conditions now obtaining. Now that the busy season is nearing the end more time can ibe employed in seeing that properties receive the necessary attention in the eradication of the rabbit pest. I have now made arrangements for the carrying out of a phosphorized pollard poisoning on the islands, of the Rangitikei river-bed. This would have been completed ere this but for the fact that the phosphorised pollard we had in hand had deteriorated in strength and a further supply had to be obtained from the Department of Agriculture at Hamilton. As soon as the weather definitely takes up the poisoning will be proceeded with. Trustee Barber expressed the opinion that rabbits were making their way into the Board’s district from the vicinity of S'andon. He thought it would be a good idea for the inspector to report on the condition oi the country bounding the Board’s area. Trustee Boswell said that rabbits were making their appearance around Kongo tea while "there Was a “nest” under the office of the Glen Oroua factory. Trustee Barber said he had recently noticed rabbits around the Manawatu County Council’s stone crusher on the baftk of the Rangitikei River.
It was decided that the inspector should malke an inspection of the country surrounding the Board’s area. PROTECTION, ON HARES. It was mentioned by the inspector that since last meeting the protection on hares in the Pahiatuft distinct had been removed by the Acclimatisation Society. 'Trustee Barber considered the Board should make a further effort to have the npotection on hares removed in the Manawatu district. Trustee Gloyn skid that he had given a good deal of consideration to the matter and was not now in •favour of having the protection removed. It would only Ibe an excuse for the “sportsmen” to run all over the properties. It was decided, however, to adopt Trustee Barber’s suggestion and to make a further endeavour to have the protection on hares in the Manawatu removed. '
Accounts amounting to £SO 5s 10d were passed for payment.
