MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There were also present, Crs. D. W. Reid, J. H. Perrett, J. Boyce, J. P. McKelvie, H. H. Hunt, and W. E. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: — Prom the Public Works Department, asking whether the Council was prepared to accept control of the new bridge over the Manawatu river at Shannon. The Department also 'intimated that the Main Highways Board has been asked to consider whether a 30/- for £1 subsidy would be available for the expenditure on the nejw deviation work. In a further letter the department advised that the deviation was, now complete and the county would be held responsible for further maintenance. It was agreed to take over the control o!f the bridge and the clerk intimated that the indications Were that the subsidy of 30/- to £ 1 would foe forthcoming. .From E. Christensen, Oroua Dawns, drawing attention to the danger at Sorensen’s corner, on the Foxton-H'imatangi road. The county engineer reported that steps 'had been taken to minimise the danger and further improvements were in train for early action, including the erecting of caution signs for motorists. From Die Manawatu Automobile Association requesting a more liberal use of the road roller on the new formation work on the Eoxton road. The chairman reported that the necessary action had been, taken prior to the receipt of the Association’s letter. The council had not been able to do anything until rain ca'me. The county engineer said that the road was in pretty good order just now, but more rain was required to assist in the consolidation of the new formation. The ehairinan considered that very satisfactory progress had been made with the work—it was beginning to look like a road now. Two and ahalf miles oif new formation, had been completed in two and a-half months.

From Mrs. Krause, lessee of Lot 40, Harbour Board subdivision, known as Langley’s corner asking the council to x'emove spoil dumped on the section by the council’s roadman.—Referred to the county clerk for a report. TREASURER’S REPORT. The treasurer reported on the county finances as follows: County fund account (debit) £4768 3s 7d, Main Highway loan account (credit) £122 4s 2d, loan account (credit) £3966 16s 2d, imprest account (credit) £76 16s Bd. The amounts available for expenditure in the different ridings were given as follows: —Sandon, £ll3 Is; Mt. Stewart, £66 18s 4d; Waitohi, £27 Is 4d; Rongotea, £32 10s; Carnarvon, £287 14s 7d; Awahou £206 14s 2d; over expended Kawa Kawa £203 19s ,2'd.—Received. RATE 'COLLECTOR'S REPORT.' The county rate collector reported that general rates amounting to £1540 16s 2d, were collected during the month of February. A sum of £1033 4s 5d was outstanding and it was hoped to collect a fair proportion of this before the end of the financial year. Arrears of general rates collected during the same period amounted to £B7 4s lid. —Received. SANSON TRAMWAY. 'The manager of the Sanson tramway reported as : follows: —'The chief items of traffic for the month of February were: Grain 9 tons, minerals and manure 391 tons, general merchandise 29i tons, stock 41 trucks, Imetal (from Terrace End) 2671 cubic yards, (froimi crusher) 109 trucks. Timber 15,600 super feet, wool 305 'bales, and eggs 107 crates. The accounts show a credit balance of £204 10s 3d for the month’s working. The works train being run between Longburn and Foxton, in connection with Main Highway re-construction is working quite satisfactorily. —'Received. RATE ROLL ALTERATIONS. The following alterations were made on the rate roll: H. J. Ransom to W. 0. Bond, section 43, black 11, Pouglas settlement; A. R. Crowe to J. B. Westlake, Himatangi 2B No. 3C iblk. H and HI, Mt. Robinson; A. and J. E. iMdNalb to J. H. Palmer, section 176, Carnarvon; K. E. Parkes to R. D. Wickham, section 167, Rongotea.
