CHRISTCHURCH SHOOTING AFFRAY.

.CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. Christchurch, Last Night. As the .result of a shooting affray in Green’s road, Papanui, this morning, Frederick Richardson, aged 56, a labourer, was arrested on a charge ,of .attempting' to murder John Armstrong, aged 42. Armstrong is now in hospital with a gun-shot wound in the back 'and pellets in the head, but is expected to recover. The police allege that Armstrong was shot after a quarrel, the cause of which is unknown. Neighbours heard a shot and rang for the police. Richardson made no attempt to evade arrest. Armstrong, who now lives in the city, was visiting Richardson’s house in Papanui when the affair •occurred. Richardson appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr. Lawry, S.M., this afternoon and .was formally charged. Accused f was remanded till March 15, bail not being .applied for. Armstrong’s wounds are not serious. On examination at the hospital, about a dozen pellets were discovered in his back, shoulder and neck. It is stated that he had never seen Richardson prior to yesterday and had never spoken to him before this morning’s incident.
