MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE
IMPORTANT REMITS PASSED. Wanganui, Last Night. There was an attendance of about 130 delegates at the annual conference of the Municipal Association which opened at Wanganui to-day, this being considered a record. The Mayor of Wanganui (Mr W. J. Rogers ) t the president of the Association, presided, Avhile the Minister of Labour, Hon. W. A. Veitch, was also present. Mr. Veitch said that the central Government had a good deal to thank the Municipal 'Conference for. Most valuable advice had been passed along from year to year. Mr. A. G. Bignell, former Mayor of Wanganui, also Aveleomed the delegates. Mr. W. J. Moffatt, Mayor of Nelson, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the speakers for their remarks. Mr. G. A. Troup, Mayor of Wellington,, also replied. ‘The folloAving remits Avere carried : “That the present method of levying hospital rate is inequitable and that all hospital expenditure be (met out of the consolidated fund.” ■ “That Borough Councils having under 6000 population be represented on the Main Highways Board and District Council.” “That in future, the Mayor and councillors’ term of office be for three years, instead of tAvo as at present and that the Act be amended accordingly.” “That the Government be urged to .arrange that the amount of petrol tax allocated to municipalities with populations over 6000 be increased frm 8 to 16 per cent. “That the Government be asked to consolidate all legislation relating to motor vehicles and traffic and to bring it into one Act.” “That municipal corporations take into consideration a scheme by Avhicli they inlay co-operate in a united insurance scheme with regard to fire, accident, .and fidelity risks. A remit lost Avas that the Government' be asked to set up independent Highways Boards for- the North and the South Island, and that funds allocated to different islands be controlled exclusively by the board concerned and that authority for transfers of moneys from one account to another be withdrawn.
