MANUAL AND TECHNICAL TRAINING.
FOXTON CENTRE. HEADMASTER’S RECOMMENDATION At last night’s committee meeting of the D.H. .School, the headmaster (Mr. F. A. Mason) recommended that provision be made by' the Education Board for full time Courses of instruction for ,the girls of Forms TIT and IV of the Secondary Department in (1) cookery, 80 hours; (2) dress-making, 80 hours. He stated that there is a definite demand for courses in dress-making and millinery in Foxton and several girls are travelling to and from Palmerston North daily to get this training. “We have splendid aceotalmodation for such classes and something definite should be done to meet the demand locally. Further, I believe that a domestic course should (form part of the training of every girl —cookery, dress-imaking, laundry work and millinery being subjects taken. With the splendid ac com'modation and equipment provided in Foxton, the Education Board should be asked to make provision for the fuller use of tlie Manual Training rooms by providing for the conveyance to: and from Foxiton of pupils of standards 5 and 6 in outlying schools —Moutoa, Oroua Downs, Bainesse particularly —possibly JRangiotu and providing these pupils with courses in (1) woodwork for boys, (2) cookery for girls.” It was pointed out that the fullest use should be made of the rooms erected and that every effort sho-_ uld be made by the authorities to see that this is done.
The .chairmlan said the services of a capable teacher for dressmaking could be obtained locally. The C'omjmittee decided to bring the matter before the Board and to urge that the headmaster’s recommendations be given effect to.
