FLOOD CONTROL SCHEME.
DISAPPOINTMENT AT. LACK OF SUPPORT. When the Manawatu-Oroua River Board met at Palmerston on Thursday, members expressed their disappointment at the lack of support Avhich had been forthcoming from local bodies for their modified scheme of flood control. Following the recent conferenco of interested local bodies to consider the scheme, these bodies were invited by the board to participate in a deputation to the government asking for a £1 for £1 subsidy iu order to enable the board to proceed with the work. Members of the board expressed disappointment at the decision of the Manawatu Drainage Board not to be represented on the deputation and it was decided to ask the board to reconsider its decision. As the outcome of the lack of response to the board’s request for support, it was resolved that deputations again wait on the Kairanga County Council, Manawatu Drainage Board, Moutoa Drainage Board and Palmerston North Borough Council, and that the Levin Borough Council be also asked to reconsider its decision.
The Board decided to advise Hon. ,T. G. Cobbe of the proposed flood control scheme, with which it was anxious that he should berciime acquainted, and extended an invitation to him to inspect the area. Members expressed surprise at the attitude adopted, it being pointed out that local bodies were not ’being asked to contribute, while a great number of the Manawatu Drainage Board’s ratepayers were vitally interested in the scheme. The money would be found from the government subsidy and the area would benefit according to classification.
