“COMMERCE TRAIN.”
WELLINGTON BUSINESSMEN TO GO ON TOUR. FOXTON INCLUDED IN ITINERARY. Early in April Wellington businessmen, some sixty-five in number, will make a tour of the Wellington, Taranaki, Main Trunk, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa districts and Foxton will be included in their intmerary. Such was the information which the local (Chamber of Commerce received at its monthly meeting on Thursday evening, from the Wellington Chamber. The President (Mr. J. K. Ilornblo'w) thought that it would be a good idea to show the visitors over one of the local fiaxmills and a poultry farm. Time would Ibe very limited, however. The “Comimerce train” would arrive in Levin from Wellington about midnight on a Friday night and the visitors would arrive in Foxton by car somewhere about 10 o’clock the following morning to connect up with the train here. He thought that a civic welcome should be accorded the visitors. The Chamber, should do all in its power to entertain the Wellington business men as by doing so they were assisting to put Foxton “on the map.”
Mr. F. C. Raikes considered that ic would be a good idea to sho'w the visitors the local wharf and make thejin conversant with the facts regarding the port and shipping. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) proposed writing the Wellington Chamber asking for a variation in the itinerary to allow more time being spent in Foxton. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Wm. Trueman, F. C. Raikes, G. F. Smith and the Mayor was set up to make arrangements to show the visitors around and it was decided that a civic welcome be accorded them by the Mayor outside the Council Chambers on their arrival.
