OROUA DOWNS SPORTS.
SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The Oroua Downs Sports Club meeting was held on Messrs Stratford’s grounds at Oroud Downs yesterday in ideal weather. The meeting was most successful from every point of view and the attendance, despite the many counter-attractions which clashed with the event, was almost a record. The meeting was conducted in a most expeditious manner by a capable committee who are ttf be heartily congratulated on the success of the sports, and in this connection a special word of 'praise is due to the work of the secretary (Mr. R. Gates). The grounds are ideally appointed for sports and ample shade is afforded patrons for picnicing. The Foxton Silver Band was in attendance and provided a tniuch appreciated programme of 1 music. 'The day was unmarred by any serious accident and concluded with a well-patronis-ed dance in the Oroua Doiwns hall. The various events resulted as follows: — HORSE EVENTS. McKelvie (Carnarvon) 1, R. Scott (Oroua Downs) 2. The sheep guessing competition was won by E. J. Boyd (1441b5.), the actual weight of the sheep being l46H'hs. A baby show attracted good entries anti resulted as follows: — Under G months: Mrs. M. J. MeKelvie’s baby 1, Kelvin Robinson 2; six to 12 months: Mary Legg 1, Jack Cowdrey 2; 12 to 18 months: \\. Bird 1, N. Niehollsi 2; 18 months to 2 years: Malvina Evans 1, Beryl Denars 2. Special prizes for twins were awarded as follows .Jim and Ray Harris 1, Noel and Eric Procter 2. In the steeplechase event J. J. Waller’s horse fell at a hurdle and the rider received a nasty knock on the head from the amtna_l’s hoof. Fortunately Mr. Waller was not seriously injured 'but was incapacitated for the remainder of the day. During the afternojon .'the trophies were presented to the winners by Mesdames J. F. McKelvie, and A. J. Phillips, while the President of the Club (Mr. J. Cameron) congratulated the winners on their success.
