PLANE LANDS AT WAIKANAE BEACH.

DESCENT DUE TO ENGINE TROUBLE. Residents and visitors at Waikanae Beach were treated on Thursday evening to the unusual spectacle of a forced landing by an aeroplane. Major Isitt was on his way in a Defence ’plane from Blenheim to Hawera, accompanied by a mechanic, and should have reached his. destination, in the ordinary course of events, at 6.30 p.m. During the flight over Cook Strait, however, engine trouble developed, and a premature landing became imperative. It was at first thought that the machine would have to be brought down on Mana Island, which does noUoffier the best surface for alighting on, but Major Isitt managed to pilot the ’plane as far as Waikanae Beach, on which a good landing was made. The aeroplane will have to remain in its present position for a day or two, pending the arrival of a mechanic with spare parts from Christchurch. In the meantime Major Isitt is staying at Mahara House, Waikanae. The engine trouble which developed during the crossing o-f the Strait is understood to have been connected with the oil-feed system. In other respects the ’plane is quite in good order.
