PERSONAL.
Mrs. W. Liddell, of Wellington, was a visitor to Foxton last week. Mrs. R. Owen has returned to Foxton from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. L. C. Bryant, who has been on holiday in Wellington, has returned to Foxton. Nurse M. Barber left for Auckland last week to enter into the nursing profession in that city. Mrs. Eric Fowler and Mrs. T. Taylor, of Masterton, have returned •from a visit to Foxton. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. 'Cunningham 'have returned to Hunterville from Foxton beach. It is probable that Air. M. E. Perreau will be returned unopposed for the Eoxton Afayoralty. Inspector Hugo will visit Foxton on Thursday next and inspect tbe local Fire Brigade. Air and Airs L. A. Richardson and family, and Airs K. Jlirini, are at .present at thd. local seaside. Miss E. ITowlinson, of Dunedin, is at present spending a holiday with iher cousin, Mrs. W. Trueman, of Lady’s. Alile, Foxton. Tbe Palmerston mayoralty will be contested this year by the sitting Mayor (M}r. A. J. Graham) and Alessrs R, Edwards and H. Oram. The friends of Miss F. Walls, will he pleased to learn that she is now making good progress towards recovery after a somewhat serious indisposition. Air. L. A. Couch, of the staff of the local branch of the Commercial ißank, is on sick leave, and his positioiij is being filled by AH. I. A. H. Symes of the Wanganui branch. Air. J. K. Hornblow, who has represented the Government on the Foxton Fire Board since its inception, has consented, at the request of the Aliuistef'of Internal Affaiys, to continue in office for a further term.
At a committee meeting of the Manawatu A. A. and C. Club, held in Palmerston North last evening, it was decided to pay the expenses of sending Aliss Alargaret Barron, of Fox'ton, to the provincial championships at Alasterton on Saturday. The death occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital os Saturday, of Airs. J. Mic-Dowall, wife of Mr. H. AleDowall, of Oroua Downs, a well-lknown settler in this district. Tbe funeral took place yesterday, the interment taking place at Foxton. A large cortege followed the remains to the graveside. The death occurred in Wellington yesterday morning of Ail’. Charles Haines, 'head- of the well-known advertising agency. He was born in Christchurch in December, 1862, and educated at the Christchurch High School and Trent College, Notts., England. He was on the head office staff of the New Zealand Railways from 1879 to 1885, and after leaving that service engaged in journalism, being for several years associated with the late Mr. Payton of the Wairarapa Daily Times, of which he eventually became managing editor. He is survived by his .widow.
