SWIMMING.

LOCAL LADS AT MANAMA! C CENTRE CARNIVAL.

La.si evening Messrs R. Ball and W. and G. Hirini took .part, in the Mauawatu Centre’s carnival held in the Palmerston North Municipal baths, and met with a fair measure of success. The local swimmers were very popular and received great ovations for their efforts. Rex Ball entered the water for the first time in a racing capacity and proved him'self a surprise packet to both local and Palmerston North supporters. Ho had no difficulty in annexing the men’s 33 1-3 yards dash handicap from ssee., and even off scratch would have been hard to beat. In this race the Hirini brothers were hopelessly handicapped out of the event, having to concede 8 seconds in the short distance of 33 1-3 yards. The spectators were not slow to voice their disapproval of the handicapping in this event when the two brothers were left standing on their marks while the rest of the competitors were well on their way towards being half way up the baths. Despite this both swam great races. The reason advanced for the discrepancy in the handicaps was that the local lads had not forwarded their times to the centre. The Hirini brothers were both placed in their respective heats for the 06 2-3 yards handicap and men’s 100 yards championship. In the two length race a close finish saw Eade just snatch a win from W. Hirini with (J. Hirini close in attendance, third. Unfortunately the championship event was swum almost immediately after the 66 2-3 yards event. W. Hirini drew first place with his brother alongside. Palmer, the winner, led practically throughout but the race looked as though it would go to W. Hirini in the second lap with G. Hirini only a short distance away. Palmer gained a distinct advantage over the local competitors in the final turn, however, and won by about two yards. G. Hirini appeared to tire somewhat towards the end and was beaten •for third place by Eade. ■R. Ball entered for the dual relay with a Feilding swimmer but the pair were unsuccessful. The results of the various races were as follows: — Men’s 33 1-3 yards dash Handicap: —Fourth heat: R. Ball (Foxton). ssee., 1; L. Smith (Apollo) 5 sec., 2; M. Osborne (Palmerston N.) 4sec., 3. Time 20 4-g. Second semi-final: R. Ball 1, N. Stevens 2, L. Smith 3. lime 20 4-ssee. Final: R. Ball 1, N. Stevens 2, R. Milverton 3. Wlon by a yard. Time 21 1-5.

Youths’ 66 2-3 yards Handicap: —First heat: G. Hirini (Foxton) ser., 1; P. Taplin (Apollo) Bsec., .2; F. B. We ekes (P.N.) 3. Time 56 2-ssee. Second heat: W. Hirini (Foxton) lsee., 1; P. C. Men’s 100 yards Championship: —First heat: L. Palmers (Levin) 1, G. Hirini (Foxton) 2, A Pemnan 3. Won iby two yards each way. Time 1.7 1-5. 'Second heat: W. Hirini (Foxton) 1, M. J. Eade (Feilding) 2, E. Fletcher (P.N.) 3. Won by 14 yards, a yard. Time 1.9. Final: L. Palmer 1, W- Hirini 2, P. C. Eade 3. Won by two yards, three yards between second and third. Time 1 min. 6sec.

Many inquiries Avere made about Harrison by officials and others interested in swimming at the carnival and regret avus expressed that he Avould not be .competing this year. Considerable interest is being evinced in local swimmers and the local club by the Centre'and neighbouring Cluibs who are very .anxious to see Foxton hold a carnival this season. No,av that the Aveather has taken up and swimming has taken on in real earnest more interest should be evinced in the local club than was shown just prior to Christmas Avhen an endeavour was made to hold the annual meeting. The time is iioav more opportune for the meeting which should be favoured with a large attendance.
