HITS OUT IN VALEDICTORY SPEECH. Christchurch, January 30. “If I live for 14;000 years I will never forget the callous and brutal treatment meted out to me.” So said Mr. Michael Foley, now retiring from the position of chief clerk of the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch, to-day, Avhen fareAveiled by the Bench, Bar and-po-lice. ‘I was denied promotion and so lose superannuation. I was retired years before my time. If such treatment is to be tolerated, justice and fair play become hollow, meaningless terms.” Various speakers paid their tribute to Mr. Foley’s work. Mi*. Henry Holland, M.P., and a Justice of the Peace, said that Mr. Foley had not had a fair deal.
