NARROW ESCAPE.
SURF BATHERS IN DANGER. & ’■ DEEP HOLE IN SHALLOW WATER. A party of Taikorea residents had rather an unpleasant experience whilst bathing in the surf at Foxton beach on Tuesday afternoon (says the Standard). According to the “Standard’s” informant, the tide was coming in at the time, but the sea was a bit choppy and, after bathing a while, some Redded to go out and were walking towards the shore in quite shallow water, not three feet deep. Suddenly, one woman was seen to throw up her arms and was found to be in difficulties, and almost at the same time others called for help, being in the same plight. Eventually, the attention of some of the stronger swimmers in deeper water was drawn to those in difficulties, and, after a little trouble, the unfortunate ones were safely got to shore. The hole where the incident happened (was thought to be at least six or seven feet deep, and had it not been for the prompt action of the rescuers a tragedy would certainly have taken place, for there were at least seven women and two men who had got into difficulties. Most of the party have 'been acquainted with this beach for many years, but they would never have believed such an incident could occur so. close to the shore. But for a severe fright nobody was any the worse for their experience.
