Messrs R. Ball,' T. and J. Hirini of the local club intend competing in the Palmerston North Swimming Sports to Ibe held next Wednesday evening.
Under the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928, which came into force on January 1, it is illegal to keep pet rabbits without a permit and for a breach of the Act a person is liable to a fine of £2O.
Mr. G. (Huntley, Borough Foreman, had a narrow escape from serious injury on Friday. He was engaged in 'cranking the tractor when it ibacktired and knocked him down. Fortunately he did not sustain any more serious injuries than a. severe bruising of his left side. The Mnnawatu Scottish Society celebrated the 170lh anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns at Palmerston North last evening. Scotch haggis was provided; for supper, being introduced to the gathering amidst the skirl of the pipes. It was then cut up and distributed, each one receiving a portion. Two men are reported to have unearthed a quantity of greenstone not far from Kumara during the holidays, disposing of their find for about £SO. Before the Great War a company successfully worked a greenstone quarry at Waini'hinilii, on the Kumara-Otira road, hut as the principal market for disposal of the stone was in Germany 'the company ceased operations and sold most of its plant. Nervous motorists have recently complained of a sign-post near Houipapa in Otago which reads. “Speed maniacs, 'before taking this hill order your coffins.” At the monthly meeting of the Southland Motor Association when a photograph of the offending sign was shown a member mentioned that at least one car had been turned 'back as a result of the notice. The hill in question was not particularly dangerous, in any case. It was decided to communicate with the South Island Motor Union in an effort to have the sign removed.
