SAD FATALITY.
TWO AIEN DROWNED. LIVES GIVEN TOR OTHERS. AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. Two men who tried to rescue two youths who got into difficulties while bathing were drowned off the beach at Kawliai yesterday afternoon. The names of the two victims are: Air T. B. Dillicar, a visitor from Hamilton, and Air Clarence Hunter, aged 18, son of Dr Hunter, of To Awamutu. There was a large number of picnickers at the beach at the beads, near the hot springs, and some went in bathing. When two young men got into trouble and called for help, Messrs Dillicar and Hunter rushed into the water to give assistance. Air Dillicar got one lad ashore, and then saw that Air Hunter was in difficulties. He immediately swam out again and, about that time, the lad Air Hunter was helping was washed up on the beach. It was realised by the anxious watchers on the shore, that neither Air Dillicar nor Air Hunter could regain the beach. Immediately a number of women formed a chain and waded in to try to help. A woman at the end of tho chain almost reached Mr Dillicar, but at that moment a big wave overwhelmed him. By that time Air Hunter had also disappeared. Still holding hands, the women fought their way back to the beach. Help was sent for and a search of the beach was commenced. Air Dillionr’s body was recovered later in the day. With bis brother, Air William Dillicar, he onoe conducted a large departmental store in the town, and latterly ho had been manufacturing condiments on a large scale.
