BATCHELOR ARRESTED
LOCATED IN MELBOURNE. Christchurch, January 9. John Black Batchelor, the missing Ohristehurchj solicitor, was arrested in Melbourne yesterday, states a cable message received by Inspector Cameron from the Australian police this afternoon. Batchelor disappeared from Christchurch on 7th August last, and on 9th August a warrant was issued for his arrest for the alleged theft- of various sums of money, including £986 from Leonard Pereival Voice, which the latter gave Batchelor to pay the purchase money on a house. As the result of a. 'meeting of the missing solicitor’s creditors, Batchelor was declared bankrupt by an order made by Mr. Justice Adams in the Supreme Court on 14th September. On 9th 'September another meeting of creditors was held, when a committee was set up to investigate Batchelor’s affairs in conjunction with the Official Assignee. Proofs of debt for sums totalling over £4OOO were submitted. Subsequently the members of the canterbury Law Society guaranteed £IOO to bring Batchelor back if he were ■found.
