MAIL DESTROYED
PARCEL MATTER BURNT,
Twelve hampers of South Island mail, which, it is understood, consisted of parcels and papers destined for Wtanganui and Taranaki, were totally 'destroyed by fire in a railway wag'on on Monday afternoon.
When a mixed train was pulling into Ivoputaroa station on that day, a wagon containing second-class mail matter was discovered to be on lire, and although strenuous efljorts were made to suppress the outbreak quickly, a large portion of the contents of 105 parcel receptables inside ,the van was damaged either by fire or water. No letters were included in the mail, which consisted chiefly of papers ,aud parcels, (including, no doubt, a number of iChristinas 'packages.
A motor lorry was despatched to collect what could be salvaged, and this was brought to Palmerston N. yesterday.
