Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1928 LIBRARY BUILDING AND PLUNKET ROOMS.

•THE local branch of the Plunket Society is worthy of practical sympathy and the public will endorse The good things said of it by the Mayor and Councillors at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting. There will, however, not be the same unanimity on the part of the public re the suggested site for the erection of a building near the entrance to Easton Park. In the first place the freehold of the land could not be granted and we presume that subsidies for building purposes whether from the Government or from private trust, would be eonditioiial upon the site being vested in the Society. This, the Council has not the power to do and, if possessed such authority, it would set up a precedent which would be availed of by other deserving and semi-public institutions. The Town Clerk’s suggestion that the question of permanent housing be embodied in the library building when erected, is worthy of serious consideration. In any case, the erection of a public library and readingroom is of prior importance from a municipal point of view than is the claim of the Plunket Society. We hope that when the subject is re-opened at next Council meeting that the Town Clerk’s suggestion be given fuller consideration and •that, noth the assistance and cooperation of Plunket sympathisers, a scheme Avill be evolved to meet the dual objective. Since the destruction by fire of the old municipal chambers, Foxton has been deprived of a public reading room and premises are rented for library purposes.
