In a subsequent statement, the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) said that the Hon. X. K. Sidey had been recommended for appointment to the Legislative Council, and that His Excellency had been pleased to approve of that recommendation. He proposed to ask the Right Hon. Sir Robert Stout and the Hon. J. Barr to act as Mr. Sidey’s sponsors when he presented himself to the Upper House to-day to be sworn. The Prime Minister added that to-day when he met the House he would make a statement, but it would not necessarily be a statement of policy. His present difficulty was that he had not yet had time to visit the Treasury and examine the state of the borrowing authorities. Until he could do this he would not be able to say whether or not they were sufficient for his purposes. He might not be able to visit the Treasury even to-day until after the House rose, but he did not anticipate keeping Parliament together much longer, since it would not be a legislative session. He could not yet say definitely that it would not be necessary to call another session in February.
