The summer vacation in connection with the local District High School commences on the 20th of this month. School breaks up on the 19th.
During the "week end burglars entered the premises, of Mr. J. Christie, hairdresser, of Palmerston N., ('and removed a safe weighing two hundredweight, and containing a considerable amount of money.
On Saturday St. Mary’s Convent held a successful shop day in Main Street. Two_ competitions were held which resulted as follows: Dressing jacket, Mr. D. Christie; chocolates, Mr. R. Heath.
On Thursday evening the local Fire Brigade held a five hundred tournament/ The prize winners were as follows: —Men: Ist Mr. W. Williams, 2nd Mr. Vertongen. Ladies : Ist Mrs. Byne, 2nd Mrs. Tuna: The vital statistics for Foxton for the month of November are as follows, the figures for the corresponding period last year being given in parenthesis:— Births 4 (3), deaths 1 (1), marriages nil (1). Maori births 1 (nil).
At. a recent meeting of the Wellington Catholic Education Trust Board, it was decided to abolish the system of school. been in operation since the establishment of the Catholic education system 50 years ago. ;
At the local Police Station this morning, before Mr. M. E. Perreau, J.P., Henry Kirby, abas Hairy Rox, w r as convicted and fined £1 in .default 48 hours’ imprisonment on a second charge of drunkenness within six months.
Inspector Law of the Inspectorate will conduct the Standard 6 Proficiency Examination at "the local Primary school to-morrow. By reason of their'-high standard of attainment during the year ll pupils have been exempted and will be granted their certificates without further examination.
A reminder is given of the garden party to be held in the Convent grounds to-morrow afternoon. Games and competitions have been arranged for and sweet and cake stalls will be held. Afternoon tea will be provided and an enjoyable time should be spent by all present. Admission is 1/-.
During the month of November rain fell locally on seven days, a total of 3.02 inches being recorded. The maximum fall occurred on the 10th, when 1 inch was'registered. The coldest day during the month was the f3th, with 54 degrees and the hottest days were on the 26th and 27th with 66 degrees. Mr. W. J. Edmonds, of Wellington, who paid a visit to Foxton yesterday and who was shown over the local Town Hall, Council Chambers and swimming baths by the Town Clerk (Mr. Wm. Trueman) expressed surprise at the marked progress made by Foxton since his last visit here in 1917.
•Portion of the Round Bush reserve has been sub-leased to some Chinese for market gardening purposes. The matter was mentioned at a meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board yesterday when a member asked if it would be detrimental to the ground to have it used as a market garden over a period of years. The secretary said that there was a clause in the agreement providing that the area would have to be sown down in grass seed at. the end of the lease. Mr. W. E. Barber said that under' the methods now adopted by the Celestials in market gardening so much artificial manure was put oh the land that it was often much better at the end than it was at the beginning.
After lying in the open for nearIf fourteen hours with a fractured thigh, the result of an accident while riding, Mr. Henry Shadbolt, of Pohangina, was brought in to the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday morning. He is aged about 60 years. Mrs. Shadbolt became anxious when her husband did not return from work about four miles away by nightfall. A search party found the injured man in a semi-conscious condition in the fern about 10.30 p.m. He was unable to move and had been exposed to rain showers and hot sun. Brought home on an improvised stretcher, he was attended by a doctor on Friday evening. It appears that the injured man’s horse slipped, possibly falling on him when he was on his way to work. His horse was found grazing in the vicinity.
Prize winners at last evening’s euchre tournament in the Town Hall supper-room were as follows: —lst prize, gents: Mr. E. Parkin, 2nd Mr. W. Williams, 3rd Mr. C. Pritchard; ladies: Ist Mrs. Small, 2nd Mrs. 'Crichton, 3rd Mrs. W. Coley.
