FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting 1 of the Foxton District High School Committee was held last evening, when Mr. M. E. Perreau occupied the chair in the absence of the chairman (Mr. J. K. Hornblow). There were also present Messrs D. Christie, S. E; Cowley, H. Hutchins, G. Huntley and the secretary (Mr. R, Rangiheuea). The headmaster (Mr. F. A. Mason) was also in attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. K. Hornblow, A. Stevenson and John Ross. A letter was read from the Board notifying that a grant of £ls had been made towards the cost of the erection of the Duncan Street fence. —Received. PREPARATION OF PLAYING area. The Board wrote recommending that the surplus, money received from the sale of the teacher s old ■ residence in Duncan Street should go towards providing a basket ball ground. The headmaster stated that he had had an idea of arranging a bazaar or carnival to raise funds for the preparation of a hard area from the retaining wall at the rear of the District High School building north towards the Primary School building which would be suitable for basket ball, tennis and drill. Owing to the. fact that the mills had been closed for such a long period this-year he had not given the matter any further consideration. A definite plan would need to be adopted before the work was commenced.

Mr. Huntley said it was no use .doing a little at a time. It would be far better to wait until the committee had sufficient funds in hand 'to complete the work before it started operations. 'The letter’was received and it was decided to adopt the Board s suggestion and earmark the money for the purpose recommended. TRANSPORT OF PUPILS. The headmaster reported that he had made suitable arrangements with Mr. R. Hart, of Manawatu Heads, to transport the pupils of the Beach side-school whose qualifications necessitated their attendance at the local District High School, to and from the Beach next year. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster reported as follows : “The annual examination of the Secondary Department and of the standards of the Primary department have been completed and reports will be issued to parents about the middle of next week. On the whole splendid work has been accomplished and high standard of efficiency maintained. An unusually heavy programme of end of year activities has yet to be faced but these will be largely in, the form of annual functions. The Matriculation Examination begins to-day and concludes on 13th. For the first time in the history of Foxton the iexam will, this year, be held locally, the Presbyterian schoolroom being utilised for the purpose with Rev. W. H. Nicholas as supervisor. “I regret to announce the resignation of Miss J. Thompson, who has for the past two years acted as Assistuut-in-charge at the side, school. Miss Thompson is a capable and efficient teacher and under her supervision the side school has done splendid work. “A minor matter requiring attention is the cutting of the grass around the High School building.

“In conclusion I desire to extend to the Committee my sincerest wishes for a Merry ’Xmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.” The report was adopted. The chairman said that he had been asked by Mr. R. J. Thompson to present a shield to the committee for competition between the Marton, Levin, and Foxton Secondary Schools, but as it would not be ready until the end of the present week and he had persuaded Mr. Thompson to make the presentation to the school himself. The competition was to be an annual one and to take place in Foxton. His idea in making the presentation was partly to bring competition to Foxton. It was decided to forward Mr. Thompson a/letter of appreciation for his gift.:» The matter of having the grasß cut at. the school was left in the hands o>f chairman. Accounts amounting to 1523/14/3 were passed for payment. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman extended the usual ’Xmas felicitations to members of the committee; which were reciprocated by those present. ;■
