COUNTY HIGHWAYS.

ENGINEER’.S REPORT. The Manawatu County engineer reported as follows at Tuesday’s meeting of the Council: —The graders had been kej)t busy on the usual maintenance works and patching. During the recent heavy rains, damage was done by flood waters to the Feilding-Awalmri, Stewart’s line, Foxton-Shannon and 'Wihirokino roads. The Foxton-Shannon road was impossible for some days and the Whirokino road had now been under water for the past ten days. During the flood period a number of stop-hanks became broken in the Moutoa district, and the chairman, the district Public Works engineer and the engineer made an inspection of the whole position. On the Sanson-Awahuri highway, the whole of the side banking, a total of three miles, 08 chains, would be completed that day, and a total of two miles, 55 chains, had been metalled. The engineer was now experiencing difficulty in obtaining sufficient metal for the work owing to the flooded state of the river, but it Avas hoped that the whole foundation Avork Avould he completed in the past month. The plans and specifications had been approved by the Higlnvays Board for the bitunienous penetration of the road, and tenders Avere being called. Plans and specifications for reconstruction of the Foxton-Hima-tangi higliAvay had been approved by the HighAvays Board and tenders Avere being called, returnable on November 30.

Plans for the Himatangi-Ran-giotu highway were being completed and Avould be forward to Wellington in the present month. Very little had been done in the ridings of late, hut owing to the heavy rains, a general grading of most roads had doav been commenced.

'The construction of Pyke’s road was progressing, but had been hampered by the heavy rains. A total length of 86 chains had been metalled. —Received.
