FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.
OPENING OF GREEN AND ■CROQUET LAWN. The Foxton Bowling Club has been dogged with hnfavourable weather for the official opening ceremony. The original date, fixed for yesterday fortnight, proved very stormy and it was decided to postpone the opening until yesterday. In the morning the weather was fine but early in the afternoon light rain commenced to fall which : after ted the attendanre. It was the intention of representatives from most of the district clubs to attend, but the only clubs from a distance who risked the weather conditions were Bulls, Levin and Shannon. . The green was in. much better condition than last year for which several club enthusiasts deserve
praise. The president (Mr. W. F. Heyes) in his opening speech, made reference to the loss sustained by the club in the death of Mr. D. Wliibley, a life member and a keen enthusiast. As a token of respect to deceased’s memory those present stood in silence for a few seconds. He regretted the threatening weather conditions, which prevented the attendance of a number of visitors from a distance. He extended a hearty welcome to those present and expressed the hope that the season would be successful from every point of view. He then called upon Mrs. Heyes to throw up the “kitty” and deliver the first, bowl, which she did like an old hand and amidst applause. The president then declared the green open.
The croquet green was also opened. A dainty and appetising afternoon tea. was provided by the ladies.
